This Women’s Day, we think it’s a good idea to look back, for just a moment, to see how this day became entrenched in modern day society.
It all began in Chicago, 3 May 1908, when the U.S. Socialist Party brought together a group of 1 500 women who demanded economic and political equality, on a day officially dedicated to ‘the female workers’ causes’. European socialists soon took up the cause and followed suit.
Closer to home, National Women's Day is a South African public holiday celebrated annually on 9 August, and on this day in 1956, approximately 20,000 women across all races, marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the carrying of passbooks.
Both the international and local events commemorating Women’s Day have striking similarities – the need for women to have equal rights to men, the cry for women to be both seen and heard, for women to have a say in what happens to them both politically, economically and socially.
